ARTS RICH PROGRAMMING

At MSC, the arts aren't extras - they're the engine of learning. Every student takes studio art that mirrors a real artist's process - from sketchbook ideas to public display - while music builds literacy through movement, singing, and improvisation.

Middle schoolers cap it off with a fully-staged spring musical - think The Addams Family, Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Seussical, Annie and Legally Blonde Jr!

PE develops lifelong fitness in our exclusive gym and the city becomes our extended classroom with at least three field trips a year to icons like NYC Ballet, Carnegie Hall, the MET Opera, New Victory Theater and Symphony Space.

Arts At Our Heart

VISUAL ARTS

At MSC, every student is a studio artist—and art shows up in everyday learning, too. Children explore many genres and the building blocks of visual art—color, line, and composition—using a wide range of materials. They work like real artists: jot ideas in sketchbooks, create and refine in the studio, share work for peer feedback, and proudly exhibit finished pieces for our community.

We see art as both a process and a product. In the studio, students learn to think creatively and solve problems. Our simple, consistent routine—introduce new materials, techniques, and concepts; give time to explore and practice; then apply that learning to a project or design challenge—meets children at every developmental stage and builds confidence.

Students also learn how to talk about art. They develop a clear vocabulary to describe their choices, offer thoughtful critique, and reflect on their own growth. Projects connect to classroom studies in language arts, math, and especially social studies, so art deepens understanding across the curriculum. The program is led by a full-time art teacher in a dedicated studio space.

THEATER

Each spring, MSC middle schoolers stage a full-scale, Broadway-style musical under the direction of our theater teacher—the capstone to a K–8 arts journey in drama, dance, music, and visual arts. Recent productions include The Wizard of Oz, The Addams Family, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Grease, Beauty and the Beast Jr., Legally Blonde Jr., Once on This Island Jr., Seussical, Annie, and The Music Man. In true MSC fashion, it’s fully hands-on: students audition, act, sing, and dance; design sets and costumes; and run lights, sound, and stage tech. They experience real production values—and the thrill of bringing a show to life for an audience of peers, families, and the MSC community.
