Summer is coming to an end and we hope you have spent many days in the sunshine with family and friends. We’ve missed you and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone on September 5th. There is so much to share with you... some new and exciting events, including our new 2019-2020 MSC Coffee Talk Series, and also introductions to new members of our staff.
MSC Coffee Talk Series
In response to feedback received last year, we have expanded our “Chats with Claire” to include opportunities for families to hear from our assistant principals. Coffee Talks will provide a forum for MSC families to hear from school leaders and learn about 2019-2020 initiatives.
Save the Dates
October 24th at 8:30 am: Coffee with School Leadership in Greenhouse: Topic: Respect for All Implementation
January 23rd at 6:00 pm: Coffee with School Leadership in Art Room: Topic: Understanding Special Education Services & Inclusion Program
March 19th at 8:30 am: Coffee with School Leadership in Science Lab: Meeting our CEP Goals
You may have noticed that the new school hours are 8:20am-2:40pm. We are now following the standard session time as recommended by the Department of Education. Families and students wait outside and enter the building at 8:10 am. Classroom teachers open their doors at 8:20am. At 2:40pm, K students will be dismissed in the auditorium, 1-2 in the classrooms and 3-5 in the Gym (locations same as last year).
Besides the school hours, the one other change we’d like to share is that, for the time being, we’re not offering the 2/3 class. All 3rd graders will be in 3rd grade classes for the upcoming school year.
The main office has moved to room 503. Please come and check it out with Malaka, our parent coordinator.
Please welcome Benjamin Schott as our new Interim Acting Assistant Principal. Ben has experience as a special education teacher, an assistant principal and director of special education at the Manhattan NYCDOE Borough Office! We will miss Modesta and wish her the best in her retirement.
We will also miss, but wish the best to Stephanie Aiello, Michelle Argumedo, Nancy Chen, Laurel Hutchinson, Rachel Karpf, Aarenne Milton, Christina Rizzo, Ana Rubinstein, and Michelle Stagnitta as they move on to new places. Joining our wonderful staff, we welcome Ashely Casella and Catherine Liu to 1st grade, Carly Wurman and Sejal Sheth to 2nd, Emily Galligan and Emma Epner to 4th and Gabriel Zuger to 5th. Nadia Lesy is our new Dance teacher and David Cerulli will teach 7th/8th science. Joining us as well are Alli Esses and Aimee Eiker as social workers. It is very exciting to welcome these highly talented professionals to our school.
This year will be wonderful. Enjoy the rest of summer. Looking forward to seeing all of you in September.
Structures for Requesting Support at MSC
Reminder: Our top priority is to ensure the social emotional and academic well-being of our students. If your child is having academic, disciplinary, or social problems at school, your child’s classroom teacher will serve as the first point of contact. Please reach out to your child’s teacher via email to share your concerns. If your child’s teacher is unable to resolve the situation, the teacher will consult with an assistant principal to create a response plan. We ask that parents support our teachers in creating a welcoming arrival and safe dismissal which requires their attention on students. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please email him/her and request an appointment.
Our Parent Coordinator, Malaka Banks, is always available to support families with questions related to school matters, policies, PA, or SLT.
