Letter from Claire - April 3

April 3, 2017

Dear Families,

We made it. ELA test is over! Thank you for leaving quickly after drop off and supporting your children. Thank you Kerry, our testing coordinator and all staff on our testing team!

We are featured in an article about our partnerships with Wellness in the Schools that was published in the New York Times this week. We are so lucky to have this partnership and it is a true example of how to help students learn important life skills. Check it out:

“Reading, Math and Sushi: Cooking as a Health Lesson”

Field Trip First Friday is this week. It is perfect timing with the ELA test being over. A friend shared with me an article from The New York Times: Clear Lessons on Familiar Streets by Jacqueline Woodson, an author many of us have read being educators. In the article it describes the tour called: The NYC Slavery Underground Railroad Tour offered by Inside Out Tours to students ages 5-14. Check it out at www.insidetouttours.com Jacqueline shares how her children begin to understand “the complexity of the city they’ve always known and loved deeply.” Something to think about doing during spring break.

April First Friday Field Trip Day is this week, April 7th. Please sign up to chaperone.

From the Classroom

Our 4-8 Town Hall was incredible! The theme this month was perseverance. Anton a fifth grader opened the event playing the piano piece: Mozart: Rondo Alla Turca. 6th graders Bella and Colleen shared their dance/skit on how to keep persevering. 6th graders Julia and Holiday and 7th graders Chloe, Lily, Isabella and Lilyana danced. 4th graders: Eden and Celia did a gymnastics routine. Madison 6th grader, Jacob 7th grader and Suki 5th grade sang. Mia and Lily, 5th graders did a tap dance performance. Madison 7th grader sang a perseverance rap of Ride by Twenty One Pilots.  Sarah, 6th grader, Avia and Yarden, Zane, Matthew and Jaden sang. Natalie, an 8th grader closed the show with a powerful song. Thank you Stephen, Nicki and Sharifa for organizing and planning such a talented event.  Thank you again to Erin and the tech team, the lights make such a difference.

Please fill out the school survey! The deadline has been extended to April 7. We really need your voice to support our school.

Have a wonderful break!
