Parent's Association Newsletter - November 2014

Welcome to our first PA newsletter! Thank you to everyone who came to the November PA meeting. There were many new faces, which we always LOVE to see. Minutes can be found on the PA bulletin board in the lobby. Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 9th at 8:45 in room 615. We are very lucky to have an SLT workshop during the meeting. The topic will be Reading Levels. Audra Robb, an MSC parent and a Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project Educator, will be leading this workshop with our very own ELA teacher, Wendy Smith. Please look out for more details, but mark your calendars.
Have you noticed how the hallways look bare? That can change with the help of your vision! Find your inner Martha Stewart! We need your input to help design workspaces for the hallways on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th floors. Imagine reading nooks, committee workspaces, small library areas, student work displays, etc.
Be creative and cost conscious in your designs. Let's make these spaces functional and welcoming in keeping with warmth of heart in the MSC mission.
All designs are due by Friday, December 5th. There will be an inbox for those designing by hand in room 516. You can also email designs (and questions) to
Here are guidelines to making the pick-up and drop-off routine smooth for all of our families at MSC.
DROP OFF: Please, if you are able to, take the stairs. When you walk in the building in the morning, take a minute to ask yourself “Should I be taking the stairs this morning?” If the answer is yes, then please do! We all know it can be hard some mornings with tired kids, but please, if you can, TAKE THE STAIRS!
If you NEED to use the elevator, please ONLY use it if there are NO students with motor needs waiting. If you are in the elevator and a student or adult in a wheelchair or walker comes to the elevator, please step out and wait for the next one.
PICK UP: If you need to pick up using the elevator, please come before 2:45 pm. And after pick up in the classroom, please wait until 3:05 before heading back down in the elevator. This will ensure that all of our students who need to use the elevator can get dismissed at the appropriate time, with the rest of their class.
If an empty elevator is going up, PLEASE do not get in it to go down to the lobby. That empty elevator is going up to pick up students that cannot take the stairs.
A Big High Five from the Annual Appeal Team!
Our sincere thanks to the families who have made a donation to this year's campaign. Because of your generosity, we're closing in on $90,000 and 30% participation. The team will be in the lobby through pick-up today to answer your questions, and our phone-a-thon will take place on Monday night. In the meantime, if you'd like to contribute online please click here.
RSF Day is Friday December 5th
Last day to sign up a guest is November 24th.
Please look for more information on how to sign up to volunteer!

A Message from the Wellness and Green Committee
We are in the middle of celebrating Wellness Week at MSC. During this week, the K & 1st Grades have enjoyed practicing yoga in the mornings. We had a visit from The New Amsterdam Fencing Academy during recess and the kids had an amazing time. The 6th grade Green Team visited 2nd & 3rd Grade classes to teach them how to sort out trash into compost, recycling and terracycling. It was a positive experience for all involved and a work in progress in the cafeteria at lunchtime. They will continue to visit classes on Friday morning.
On Friday, we celebrate Harvest Day with fall tastings in the cafeteria and greenhouse with Chef Dean Sheremet, and our very own Chef Sara Fry.
Wellness Week culminates on Friday evening with Family Fitness Fun Night from 5:30-7:30 in the school. Please join us with your family!
These programs are awesome, but we need your help to make them a success.
Volunteers are needed for:
  • Family Fitness Fun Night: We need help with setting up, directing and breaking down. To volunteer, e-mail Nancy Easton
Terracycle Program: Ongoing for the rest of the year. We need help with individual brigades. Volunteers will oversee, pack and send in terracycle items to raise money for the school. To volunteer e-mail
Scholastic Book Fair at MSC
December 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
The Scholastic Book Fair will return to MSC during the first week of December! Over 600 titles for ages K-8 will be on sale in the Lobby from Monday to Thursday, December 1-4, 8:30am to 5:30pm each day.
This is an annual fundraiser for MSC as well as a literacy-building event for our school. MSC targets putting 2,500 books into our children’s hands through the Book Fair. In addition, our school earns 25¢ on every dollar, and hopes to raise $4,000 for MSC’s PA-supported programs.
So get ready to build your child’s home library, purchase needed books from your teacher’s Wish List, expand the MSC Book Room collection for all classes, or get early gifts for the holiday season.
Please volunteer at the Fair. We are asking MSC parents to help staff the Book Fair between 8:30-10:30am, and 2:00 to 4:00pm each day. Volunteers can sign up at Volunteer Spot by clicking this link Or email the Book Room at MSC.BOOKROOM@GMAIL.COM. Even an hour of your time will help us reach our literacy and fundraising goals!
MSC will also offer the Scholastic Book Fair ONLINE, with a larger selection of books (over 10,000 titles) from Scholastic and all its affiliated publishers. The online fair begins Monday, November 24 at: (The online Fair closes Tuesday, December 9.)
