Good news, string instrument instruction is coming to MSC!
Starting in January, your children will have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument with their peers through an exciting pilot After School Strings program.
Each child will select an instrument--Violin, Viola or Cello. Children will study their chosen instrument one day each week in group classes of 8-15 kids. In April, an additional orchestra class will be added to meet on a fourth afternoon. The pilot program will culminate with a performance for friends and family in June.
Why study a musical instrument? Research has proven the benefits of music instruction on brain development in children. Learning to play an instrument can strengthen abstract reasoning, discipline, collaboration, self expression, and imagination and has been shown to improve students' grades in both reading and math.
Who are the instructors? We are excited to begin a partnership with Scarsdale Strings, www.scarsdalestrings.com<http://www.scarsdalestrings.com> a premiere provider of music instruction, currently in over 50 New York schools. Scarsdale Strings was selected because of the quality of their teaching, the passion they have for music education, and because they will be able to grow with us over the years as we potentially add chorus, winds, jazz and traditional music classes within the curriculum. Please see the attached introductory letter from Scarsdale Strings.
Why is the program for kids in grades 1-3 Experts agree, the ideal age to start string tuition is between the ages of 5-8. However, the program is designed to grow with the kids, so first, second and third graders who start studying now will be able to continue through to the 8th grade.
How can I sign my child up? Spaces are limited and there has been a lot of interest. As this is a pilot program, we need to hear from you! Please reply via email to firstname.lastname@example.org<mailto:email@example.com> if you are interested in signing your child up for this program. Your name will be put on a waiting list on a first come, first serve basis. This will in no way obligate you to participate, but it will help us to gauge interest and set costs.
How much does it cost? It depends on how many people sign up! Here is a break down of how it might work.
Tuition will be approximately:
* $26 per week ($105 a month) if 8 kids sign up for each class,
* $21 per week ($84 per month) if 10 kids sign up for each class
* $17.5 per week ($70 per month) if 12 kids sign up for each class
* $14 per week ($56 per month) if 15 kids sign up for each class
Where do the instruments come from? MSC owns a limited number of instruments, and scholarships may be available. However, Scarsdale strings has instruments for rent at an extremely affordable rate of just $10-15 per month.
We look forward to hear from you!
