Letter from Claire - Nov 6

Dear Families,
November’s First Friday Field Trip Day was a splendid day!  Our students enjoed the wonderful warm weather and went to the farmers market, New Victory Theatre, NY Historical Society, neighborhood walks, Brooklyn Bridge Park, the library, Clarke Theatre at Lincoln Center.  The 8th graders went to Earth IMAX at the Museum of Natural History through our partnership with Urban Advantage and the 7th graders travelled all the way to Philadelphia to see all the historical.  Thank you to all the families that volunteered for the trips. It is a great way to celebrate the teacher, student and family connection, a MSC tradition!

This week I attended a principal conference at Teachers College. Peter Johnson was the keynote speaker.  He wrote Choice Words: How Our Language Affects Children’s Learning, a favorite of mine. He spoke about building intellectually, socially, and emotionally healthy learning communities. He explained engagement is genuine motivation and self-determination. Students who are engaged are: happier, have more friends, feel more control of their lives, and makes better decisions.

Questions Posed:
What do we expect to see and hear in an intellectually healthy classroom?  Engagement (not compliance), children inquiring, questioning, theorizing, seeking evidence, disagreeing, helping and help-seeking when necessary, collaborating, expecting, and engaging different perspectives, no intellectual hierarchy.

What do we expect to see and hear in emotionally and socially healthy classrooms?
Pro-social behavior, collaboration, positive, relationships, empathy, helping and help seeking, emotional self-regulation, dialogic discussion of emotional and relational issues, a sense of gratitude, no social hierarchy, happiness.

From the Classroom
Eden, Finn, Alexandra and Bryant from Fara and Hilary’s 5th grade class, shared with me their published personal narratives: flying by myself on a plane, boating in banana boat, dancing dilemma and the final test in Math. Students shared how they refined their writing by adding figurative language to stretch out story, including a problem, resolution, and external thinking.
