We have 40 replies from our 8th Grade parents supporting our plans for a trip to Washington, DC. We are waiting for your reply. We need to hear from everyone - that includes you. Do not let the cost of the trip keep you from responding. Full scholarships are available.
About the Trip:
The trip would be for 3 days and 2 nights - May 18-20.
Nicki, our 7th/8th grade history teacher, worked with parent volunteers and the tour operator to craft an itinerary that would include visits to many museums and monuments so that the program would align closely with the 8th grade history curriculum. Tour highlights would include:
• The city’s best-known monuments (Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean War Veterans’ memorials, and more)
• A stop at the White House to view the exterior and grounds up-close
• The Smithsonian museums, the National Mall, and the Holocaust Memorial Museum
• The U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court Building
• Mt. Vernon, George Washington’s historic home
• Arlington National Cemetery
Accommodations would be provided by the Comfort Inn & Suites at Dulles, with overnight security specifically for the floors where the students are staying. In addition to the tour operator’s guides, 6 MSC teachers, parent volunteers, and a member of the administration would serve as chaperones.
The cost would be $400 per student. This includes the bus, hotel, meals, and museum tours. Every year, MSC asks families to contribute $200 for graduation, prom, and a yearbook for their 8th grader. The Washington DC trip would bring the total cost for 8th grade events to $600. Families would have the option of paying in installations or in full. While everyone is expected to contribute an amount that fits within their budget, families can apply for a scholarship to defray some of the cost. We are also looking into fundraising activities to help pay for the trip. Any assistance would be appreciated!
