Wellness in the Schools (WITS) is a non-profit, community-based organization founded in 2005 by a group of concerned public school parents. WITS inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness and fitness as a way of life. WITS is certified as a vendor, endorsed by the NYC Board of Education and supported by private donations and corporate grants. WITS operates Coach for Kids and Cook for Kids in more than 25 New York City public schools, serving over 20,000 students.

MSC WELLNESS AND GREEN INITIATIVES

Manhattan School for Children’s (MSC) K-8 community has an active Wellness and Green Committee that has created a comprehensive wellness policy for our school that enjoys enthusiastic participation from students, teachers and families. Some of the highlights of our initiatives include the following:

RECYCLING, COMPOSTING AND TERRACYCLING

We actively collect materials to recycle and compost in our classrooms and cafeteria. In addition, we participate in a program called Terracycle (collecting yogurt containers, Elmer’s glue, granola packages and much more) – and this not only reduces landfill waste but earns money for our school in return.

WELLNESS IN THE SCHOOLS (WITS)

WITS is an active partner to our community, providing MSC both the Cook for Kids and Coach for Kids programs.

  • The Cook for Kids program works in MSC’s cafeteria to serve an approved “DOE Alternative Menu” for lunch. This menu provides more options cooked from scratch, including a delicious and bountiful salad bar. Children also receive regular hands-on cooking and nutrition classes.
  • Through Coach for Kids, MSC employs specially trained WITS coaches in the recess yard, who work to get the least-active children involved more activities and helps to create safe places to play.

COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA)

MSC has partnered with a local farm in New Paltz, NY. Fresh produce is brought to the school on a weekly basis, and families and faculty at MSC are able to purchase shares of the fresh produce. Purchased shares of eggs and meat are also available.

SNACKS AND CELEBRATION FOOD

MSC promotes healthy snack choices in the classroom as well as for classroom events. We urge that no sugary and processed items are brought into the school for these activities.

WELLNESS AND GREEN CLASS PARENT

One parent in each class is asked to be a Wellness and Green Parent Volunteer. This helps to ensure sustained classroom participation in all of MSC’s wellness and green initiatives.

Our Wellness and Green Team give classroom and staff presentations on our wellness and green initiatives. The children are educated on how to participate in recycling and other green initatives, so they truly understand their responsibility as individuals and how their choices and actions affect the greater community.

Waste-free lunch items are also sold in the school, to support those who bring lunch from home to generate less packaging waste.
