MSC Special Events 2016
Hey! Spring, what happened? I was so happy watching the daffodils bloom until 40 mph winds and snow showed up. This weather is stressing me out. In fact, I have all this tension in my neck and shoulders because of it. I’m not sleeping. If only there were a way to relieve general stress and promote a good night’s sleep.
Message from our PTA Co-Presidents
Dear MSC Families:
In an effort to teach our children about hunger in our community, in April, MSC classes will be visiting the food pantry at the West Side Campaign Against Hunger, located on 86th Street. Also, during the week of April 18-22, MSC will be holding a non-perishable food drive to help those in need. During that week, families can bring food donations to the school lobby and they will be brought directly to the neighborhood food pantry for distribution.
We will be accepting the following items, low sodium/healthy options are preferable:
- Canned beans
- Canned fruit, packed in juice or water
- Applesauce, no sugar added
- Canned vegetables
- Spaghetti sauce
- Canned chicken packed in water
- Canned fish, packed in water (Tuna, Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines)
- Bottled water and other low-sugar beverages
- Tea and coffee
Please give only foods you would serve to your family. Please don't give anything expired, open, or damaged. Canned and jarred foods only please!
Thank you for your support!
Brad and Lisa
Parents wanted to serve on NY State Learning Standards Committee - Albany - week of July 11, 2016
On behalf of Nan Mead, CEC3 First VP, CPAC Vice Chair and NYS Board of Regents:
Parents can apply to participate in a Common Core Standards Committee run by NYSED. Note: you must be available to travel to Albany the week of July 11. Application deadline: April 14, 2016
Last May, the NYS Education Department asked NYS PTA to reach out to parents and parent organizations to share their voices during the NYSED Learning Summit. Once again, we have been asked to share an opportunity for parents across this diverse state to share their voices, perspectives and experiences; this time on the NYS Learning Standards.
The New York State Education Department is looking for parents to participate on committees that will review and revise NYS ELA and Mathematics Standards. Parents who apply and are selected by the process cited below will sit on grade level teams (pre-K-1, 2-3, etc) with educators and professionals to review and revise either ELA or Mathematics standards through the year. This is not a review of the assessments, but only the NYS Standards at this time.
We are asking you to share this opportunity as quickly and widely as possible. The deadline for completion of all four elements is April 14, and access to those documents is through the NYS PTA website link:http://www.nyspta.org/Advocacy/advocacy_standardrevcomm.cfm. Please note, one item is completed online, while the other three must be mailed to the New York State Education Department.
Thank you in advance for your efforts on behalf of all parents to make a difference for our children.
You, as a parent, can have a say in what your student should know and be able to do at a grade level.
Learning standards are part of the “Ladder of Learning” expectations, where each rung is connected to successful graduation.
The NYS Education Department (NYSED) asks that parents help review and revise the ELA and Mathematics Learning Standards during 2016-17. The Standards revision is first; assessments will be addressed later.
Interested in being considered for one of these committees? Start your application here.
Want to know more about the commitment? Click here.
Application deadline: April 14, 2016
If you choose not to apply at this time, there will be opportunities later this year for you to comment or give feedback.
