For D3 Families from CEC3: Important Information Regarding Upcoming
Dear D3 Families:

As CEC members we are committed to supporting our parents in all ways.

With the New York State ELA and Math Tests for grades 3-8 coming up
tomorrow and next week respectively, parents have been seeking objective
information about these state tests and the issues surrounding potentially
"opting out" their children from these tests.

While the DOE has put out a "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on Student
Participation in Grades 3-8 New York State Tests - Parent Guide" - which we
have attached - some believe this document does not fairly represent the
issues. As such, and because we believe parents should have balanced
information on important issues facing our children's education, we also
are attaching an alternative FAQ below on the topic which has been put
together by the anti-testing group, Change the Stakes, as well as a letter
parents can use to opt their children out should they choose to do so.

At this stage, CEC3 as a Council has not taken a unified stand regarding
whether parents should “opt out” or “opt in” their kids. Regardless, *we
at CEC3 ALL firmly believe that the decision whether to have your children
take - or refuse to take - tomorrow's State tests should rest entirely with
parents. *We further believe that informed and engaged parents are key to
improving our children's educations and our public education system as a
whole. We hope that the information provided in this email helps in some
small way to informing and engaging parents on this important issue.

Yours sincerely,

CEC3
