NOTE FROM PTA: Grades 3-8 New York State Tests
Dear 3-8th grade families,

The New York State Tests for grades 3-8 are April 14th, 15th, 16th (ELA) and April 22rd, 23rd, 24th (Math).

At MSC, we are fortunate to be part of a program that looks at the whole child and where standardized tests do not play a large role on how we measure our children’s academic strengths.

We wanted all of you to know that if you do not feel the New York State Tests are an appropriate experience for your child, you have the right to opt out of state testing.
You must submit an official refusal letter no later than April 13th. Please see Darlene in room 610 or email her atDDooley2@schools.nyc.gov to get a sample letter that has the language needed to make an official “refusal” request. You may find sample letters online, but please check with Darlene to make sure the language is correct.

Any child who does not take the test should still come to school. There will be an alternative space for the children to read while the tests are being administered.
Here are 2 of the many websites available for parents wishing to educate themselves about the tests. http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/ei/eigen.html http://www.nysape.org/refusing-‐the-‐test-‐ resources.html
We hope this information helps you make the most appropriate choice for your child.

All the Best,
Andree and Alison, PTA Co-Presidents
