WITS/Cook for Kids Fall Update 2014

Dear WITS Principals and Parent Liaisons,

Happy Fall! I hope that the start of the school year has gone well for you. We are all delighted to be continuing our work in your schools, and for the new schools we thank you for beginning this journey with us.

As we embark on the 10th anniversary of WITS, I am very excited about our progress over the past 10 years, as well as our potential.  Our goal continues to be simple and yet powerful — to bring healthful cooking and education to kids in under served communities, where poverty and food insecurity lead to obesity and other chronic health issues.  I continue to be struck by the impact we are having on our kids and the next generation.  We need to reach the kids, and by extension their parents, when the kids are still young in order to make any kind of difference on the trajectory of their lives.  Thank you for your partnership.

I will send an update letter to you four times each year, as well as a seasonal newsletter (we have added you to our WITS data base), along with monthly updates from Ting.  These bits of communication should keep you up to date on our progress together.  We will try to keep our communication to only these vehicles, unless we have time-sensitive news or you require more, so please make sure you read on.

• All WITS NYC schools continue to use the DOE SchoolFood Alternative Menu.  This menu is approved by the USDA and can be used in ANY NYC school.  Monthly Menus will be available on the WITS website.  WITS will continue to consult with SchoolFood on recipe and menu development. We hear the feedback from you and your kids, and we will continue to push for healthier, scratch cooked alternatives. For those of you who serve supper, SchoolFood has developed an Alternative Supper Menu that is available to all schools.  If you are interested in this please contact your SF manager, and feel to reach out to me with questions.

* WITS Tomato, Kale, and Apple Labs (seasonal cooking classes) have been ongoing since the end of September!  WITS Chefs are teaching kids how to make a simple tomato sauce, a ginger kale salad, or chunky applesauce.  Principals – thank you for assisting the WITS Chefs in scheduling and storing the cooking equipment. Parents – thank you for jumping in and helping out during classes.  Don't worry if you missed the first round of WITS Labs, there will be other opportunities later in the year.  Please be on the lookout for future dates in your WITS Chefs Community Letters.

• Since this is my first note, I thought I would share some information about WITS (attached), in case you would like to share with your communities.  Please feel free to ask your WITS Chef to join you at a parent meeting, a staff meeting, or any community meeting.

I look forward to seeing you at your schools. Many thanks for your support.

All the best,
Marjorie
